In the News: Jonathan Rhys Meyers Battle with Addiction

Jonathan Rhys Meyers is commonly known for his roles in “The Tudors” and “Mission Impossible.” The star of the new NBC show Dracula has opened up recently about his battles with alcoholism and depression. The star has entered rehab at least a half a dozen times and was rushed to the hospital after an alleged suicide attempt. The Irish actor, who has long struggled with substance abuse issues, reportedly  didn’t get paid the majority of his salary for the vampire drama until filming  had completed.

I think it is understandable but still not right that they held his salary and pay for Dracula until it was completed. NBC was worried that his struggles with addiction would interfere with his acting and filming of Dracula. Jonathan Rhys Meyers spoke to the Irish Mirror and was truthful about his battle with staying sober. “I was wild, I was as wild as you can get. “When you are on the front of newspapers for stupidity, getting drunk at airports, fighting with cops and stuff like that, you wake up the next day and you can hardly *bleep* remember it. Responsibility gets diminished.”

As an alcoholic and addict in recovery myself, I definitely can look back on certain incidents in my active addiction and I am in shock from the foolishness of the things I was doing! I can’t imagine having the paparazzi capturing pictures and writing stories about all the things I did. But like Jonathan Rhys Meyers states, it’s not even about the consequences we suffer; it’s about the pain our family and friends go through.

After reading all these articles, it seems to me that Jonathan Rhys Meyers had some sort of a spiritual awakening in the process of getting sober and is really able to look at things clearly now. He even spoke with his friends about remembering going out and always knowing where he was going to end up at the end of that night, right back in the midst of his addiction. He now says he has made the decision that enough is enough.

Now Jonathan Rhys Meyers is taking on this new role as “Dracula,” where he is doing a supernatural role. He was unsure about the role at first when he became attached to the project. His goal for the show is to show the true suffering of a vampire living for 400 years, not able to die or find love. Essentially he wanted to do something different from the movie series of “Twilight.”  He stated that the Twilight films were good but he wants to show the actual misery of living for that long and not finding love.

I think it’s great not only for Jonathan Rhys Meyers to be taking on a new and exciting role but also to be open with the public about his sobriety. All these famous people who are being so exposed about their recovery are really making a good statement to the youth of today, in my opinion. It’s a way of saying that it’s okay to be sober, whether you’ve had a problem or not. I think it also inspires a lot of young people and people of all ages to want to get help and get sober. If stars opening up about this issue can save at least one life, then it’s worth it. If you or a loved one are struggling with substance abuse or addiction, please call toll free 1-800-951-6135.
