In The News: LA Sheriff's Deputies Accused of Rape, Smuggling Heroin and Immigrants

Deputies in Los Angeles have been accused of rape, sneaking heroin into a prison, stealing cash from a narcotics bust, smuggling undocumented immigrants and even using a Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department helicopter for unofficial business. This was just some of the misconduct investigated — and corroborated — by the Office of Independent Review in a recently issued report. “When these matters are brought to our attention, we make every effort to investigate them as promptly as possible and take the most appropriate correction action,” Sheriff Todd Rogers said in an email Thursday. “This can include retraining, written reprimands, suspensions, demotions, and even discharge.”

The OIR, a civilian oversight body generated by the county Board of Supervisors, is tasked with making sure the LASD’s internal affairs investigations are in-depth and effective, and the suggested punishment is fair. These deputies are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that is above accusation and require the same for those who work within those chains of commands. The LASD has been accused of many different crimes such as: trying to deliver heroin inside a burrito to an inmate, assaulting a girlfriend and her child, unauthorized use of a helicopter, stealing money from a narcotics investigation, and inappropriate sexual relationships with inmates, prostitutes and other women.

The Sheriff’s deputies have clearly been acting out and not behaving how you would expect a police officer to act. I was always afraid of cops when I was out there getting drunk and high and that was usually because I was up to no good or not obeying the law. Now I am afraid of cops because they are misbehaving; and that’s definitely not how people are supposed to feel about law enforcement. Some of the charges I read that are currently under investigation with the LASD are scary things to think a police officer would do. All of this takes me back to the story of Rodney King getting beaten by the police; this was known as one of the most infamous police brutality cases.

It’s insane to me that you can go on YouTube or google and search police beating up people and find so many different videos and cases of it. In my opinion, it really makes me believe that they should do more thorough physiological reviews on these men and women before they hire them to be police officers. The fact that due to privacy laws, they are keeping the identities and incident dates private is ridiculous to me. It seems that just because it was sheriff’s deputies that broke the law they are being treated differently. Breaking the law is breaking the law and I think they should be reprimanded and punished just like anyone else would.

Treating the police officers different than a normal person would be treated really is a bad look on our law enforcement; it’s showing that certain people can be given special treatment. All of the crimes committed by the LASD are horrible and should be punished to the full extent of the law and I think anything else is simply discriminating.
