Can PTSD Be Treated During Drug Rehab?

By: Rhea Rosier, Palm Partners Recovery Center

December 13th, 2011

Not all drug rehabs can treat PTSD it takes a someone who specializes in the treatment of PTSD in order to have an effective therapeutic change established in a client or patient. PTSD stand for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Addicts and alcoholics in their active drug use or drinking are prone to experiencing some kind of traumatic event in their past that is causing their use, is their use or happened during their use. PTSD can be treated during drug rehab if the specific rehab offers some kind of therapy treatment to help deal with it. For instance some drug rehabs treat PTSD with hypnotherapy.

In order for a drug rehab to treat PTSD with hypnotherapy though there must be a licensed hypnotherapist on staff. Hypnotherapy is an amazing process that quickly and painlessly eliminates the negative effects of trauma. This very client centered, un-intrusive therapy allows individuals to live a normal life with out being blocked by experiences from the past. PTSD is a severe anxiety disorder that can develop after exposure to any event that results in psychological trauma. This event may involve the threat of death to oneself or to someone else, or to one’s own or someone else’s physical, sexual, or psychological integrity, overwhelming the individual’s ability to cope. As an effect of psychological trauma, PTSD is less frequent and more enduring than the more commonly seen anxiety. Symptoms for PTSD include experiencing the original trauma again and again through flashbacks or nightmares, avoidance of stimuli associated with the trauma, and increased arousal – such as difficulty falling or staying asleep, anger, and hypervigilance.

The citeria requires that the symptoms last more than one month and cause significant impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. When individuals experience trauma deep parts of the mind continue to respond to that trauma long after the experience has passed. These repressed feelings affect thinking, emotions, relationships health and behavior. Traumatic experiences include things as normal as receiving a poor grade in school to incidences as serious as an assault and rape.

Hypnotherapy painlessly and quickly can elminate these symptoms of PTSD. Not all treatment centers can treat PTSD but if they do it can have a radical effect on a client’s sobriety. A lot of the times PTSD can severely hold someone back from achieving lifetime sobriety. This is why the best treatment centers offer a solution for any PTSD symptoms and can even go so far as to help with drug and alcohol cravings.
