How to Find a Rehab Scholarship

One of the first concerns many people have when trying to pick the right rehab is about cost; can I afford it? It is a well-known fact that rehab is not cheap, especially if you don’t have health insurance or the right kind of health insurance. Rehab can range from hundreds to even thousands of dollars per day. This can be a huge burden if you begin to think about the length of a normal rehab stay, which is usually around 30 days or longer. The sad thing is that most people who really want and need rehab are the ones who cannot afford it. That’s where rehab scholarships come in.

Luckily what you will find is that most rehabs are owned and even managed by others who are in recovery from addiction themselves so they will totally understand this concern. Depending on the rehab you may be eligible for a scholarship if you cannot afford the program. And a rehab scholarship is exactly what it sounds like, a scholarship just like for college; except this one is for rehab.

But how do you find a rehab scholarship?

Finding a rehab scholarship doesn’t have to especially difficult. What it really comes down to is finding a program that, first, even offers scholarships or grants. And second, will offer it to you.

The best bet for finding a rehab scholarship is to begin calling the rehabs that you want to attend and telling them your situation. Most rehabs have a specific amount of money they can use for rehab scholarships per year and as long as that money isn’t used up then they can probably help you (this usually means if they tell you they can’t offer a scholarship it isn’t because they don’t want to. Most rehabs want to help as much as possible.).

So begin calling rehabs that you want to attend and make sure that your first question, as it normally is, is about the money. You don’t want to spend precious time on the phone to find out that you can’t even go to the rehab center. When you or your loved one decides or needs treatment, time is of the essence! If the rehab you call doesn’t offer rehab scholarships ask them if they can recommend the next place to call that might. Usually people in the rehab industry know each other and they can help you find the next place that will be capable of offering you a rehab scholarship.

Ask the rehab if they offer rehab scholarships and what you will need to do to be considered for one or if it is possible. Tell them the situation.

Some rehabs if they cannot give you a full rehab scholarship will even try to give you a partial scholarship or cover part of the cost if you can manage to pay a certain portion of the amount. Some rehabs will offer scholarships that work along with health insurance if you happen to have it. So say health insurance covers 80 percent of your cost, the rehab may be able to pick up the last 20% of it so you don’t have to pay anything.

Regardless of how much money you need the best and really only way to find a rehab scholarship is to physically pick up the phone and ask. You never know until you try. Expect to get a few no’s but don’t give up! Many rehabs like we said before are run by former addicts themselves and want to be able to help; someone may be willing to do that for you.
