When you first go into rehab, there are many different things you typically hear the therapists and techs saying to you. I’ve thought of some of the most common things you hear in rehab; as told by one of the most amazing shows: Modern Family.

Pretty much everything they say to you and are trying to impress upon you in treatment is really for your own good. They are trying to teach us to do things like functioning members of society. We never think it’s true but rehab romances never last – fact. A lot of us have to find that out the hard way but it has shown to be true for everyone I’ve known so far. They say when you start using drugs and alcohol is when you stop maturing, this is true, as well. We learn to be mature in treatment and act like adults. You realize everyone is in there for the same common reason – we all have an addiction that we are powerless over.

They show you how unmanageable your life truly was. When I first got sober, I didn’t think my life was as bad as it was. Looking back now, my life was out of control. When in addiction, we acted on impulse a lot and didn’t think our actions through. Now is the time to learn to pause and think before we act and even before we speak. Growing up, a lot of us thought it wasn’t okay to talk about how we were feeling, but it is and they express this strongly in treatment. We need to be open to new activities; especially if we want to learn how to have fun in sobriety! You won’t always find the same things fun that you once did.

You are customarily assigned chores and expected to clean up after yourself in treatment. Something we really should have been doing at this point of our lives, anyways. You learn to get to the bottom of your issues, that feelings are normal and how to cope with these new feelings. Sometimes treatment can be overwhelming and we need alone time, and that’s okay. For me, one of the most difficult things to learn was how to cook and feed myself. Honestly, I am still working on the whole cooking thing. All of this is not going to be immediate; a lot of these things take time to learn. Just do the best you can and take everything one day at a time!
