I don’t know about everyone else, but going to a normie party in sobriety is an extremely eye-opening experience. I used to get so upset that I couldn’t party anymore and now I realize that parties aren’t all that much fun! I thought of the 10 things only sober people notice at parties.

10 Things Only Sober People Notice at Parties…

1. At normie parties, they don’t actually do anything but drink or smoke (no actual activities are happening, so it can be quite boring.)

2. People drinking at parties tend to start repeating themselves (the same things make them excited, angry, sad, etc. over and over again.)

3. People forget you aren’t drinking and always tell you to be extra careful when you drive home (be careful, there are a lot of cops out there.)

4. A plus side to being sober at a party, you can leave whenever you want (you don’t have to sleep on the floor or in uncomfortable places because your wasted.)

5. You sometimes take on the role of a babysitter (this is the complete opposite of fun.)

6. You notice that people aren’t really having that good of time (people are bored, wasted or emotional.)

7. You are able to notice the creepy people or “red flag” situations (now that we’re sober, we thank god we have our wits about us.)

8. Most of the conversations not only aren’t very interesting, they also don’t make much sense (that can be funny to watch at times.)

9. People get very lovey-dovey (I love you and all, but we don’t have to hug every 5 seconds…)

10. All of these people, who are completely tanked, are going to be hating life in the morning (and you will be waking up nice and NOT hungover!)

Realizing all of this about going to parties definitely made me realize it wasn’t the parties I liked; it was the getting drunk and high part of it. Now-a-days, I enjoy having a girl’s night or doing activities with my friends but it’s definitely not the same as the parties I used to attend. When I was in my active addiction, I honestly was always the one to disappear from the party and have everyone freaking out wondering where I was; usually disappearing to go get more drunk or high somewhere else.

Now that I’m in recovery and am able to truly have a good time and enjoy myself, I’ve found other things to do that are much more entertaining than a party. Spending time with my friends, sitting around a bonfire talking, going to the movies, shopping, playing games, etc. is all much more fun than my old party days. I was always so scared that I wasn’t going to have fun anymore once I got sober but it turns out – I wasn’t even having fun in my active addiction at all! Thank god for 12-step meetings and all the amazing people I’ve met that have showed me a new and better way of life.
